CITIZENS CONCERNS AT CSOS OIL AND GAS FORUM IN WESTERN REGION


In the just-ended  interaction between the Integrated Social Development Center, ISODEC, members  of the Oil and Gas Platform and the Western Regional communities bordering the  oil and gas find, members of the communities came up with the following  concerns on local content issues.  Please  find below some of the concerns, fears, threats and expectations of the  citizens.  This is unedited.

     
  1. Job availability for seamen in  the supply of tugs and bulges to be created as soon as possible. 
  2.  
  3. Supply boats, tug boats,  bulges, motor boats should all be entrusted to the national union of seamen to  manage.
  4.  
  5. High standard of living
  6.  
  7. Increase in prices of  commodities
  8.  
  9. Support Ghana statistical  services to provide credible funding and relevant data to promote real and  essential development
  10.  
  11. Increase of sea traffic
  12.  
  13. Pressure on social amenities  like hospitals, schools, roads, provisioning of water and power
  14.  
  15. Training of our young engineers  so as to take the mantle from the whites in the near future
  16.  
  17. Concerns about out fire related  issues regarding this oil find must be taken seriously
  18.  
  19. Fire management practices must  be enforced.
  20.  
  21. Carnage on our roads resulting  in fire outbreaks
  22.  
  23. Because the nation made little  or no input in financing the production processes, we would be handed huge  product ion costs and less profits
  24.  
  25. Pilfering and social vices
  26.  
  27. Legal experts, business  experts, bankers, data experts
  28.  
  29. Scholarship fund for brilliant  but needy students should be established in the host communities for further  studies.

  31. Oil and gas possess threats to  the fishing industry and environment.
  32.  
  33. Negative social impacts,  prostitution, gangsters regardless of social virtues
  34.  
  35. Aquatic life in danger when  there is spillage
  36.  
  37. The host communities are  expecting massive development in their communities
  38.  
  39. Acquisition for land  aquaculture should be made affordable for fishermen (alternative livelihoods)
  40.  
  41. Scholarship fund or the  affected districts.
  42.  
  43. Ghanaians should be trained to  be able to work on downstream operations.
  44.  
  45. Job opportunities for taxi  drivers
  46.  
  47. Diverse job opportunities for  youth in Ghana for decent life
  48.  
  49. Fishermen expect the government  to put in place measures to safe guard the fishing industry
  50.  
  51. Supervision of district  assemblies by the chiefs
  52.  
  53. Promiscuity/AIDS and other STIs
  54.  
  55. Fishermen are at risk of losing  their livelihoods due to oil spillage
  56.  
  57. RCC and MOFA should develop an  agricultural framework policy that can enhance food security
  58.  
  59. Spillage and excessive smoke in  the atmosphere
  60.  
  61. Loss of aquatic life and acid  rain
  62.  
  63. Chiefs’ interest superseding  that of the people resulting in the sale of lands etc.
